Data sharing through Universal Behavior Exchange (UBX)
Read the story behind it…
Software integrations can deliver powerful results for users. However, they sometimes demand many adjustments and a knowledge of both products. Such is the case with the integration of Experience Analytics (Tealeaf) On Premises and Universal Behavior Exchange (UBX). (Even the name is complicated.)
Data analysts who use Experience Analytics On Premises to monitor customer behavior often want to pass observations to other marketing applications for further analysis or action. Universal Behavior Exchange (UBX) gives them a way to exchange data with various other applications without the need for a dedicated and complicated software integration. This example presents the set of procedures that tell administrators how to connect Experience Analytics On Premises with UBX.
During my planning sessions with the Development team and Product Manager we agreed that we could assume the integration would always be performed by administrators who are familiar with Experience Analytics. We also assumed some familiarity with UBX. The procedures describe actions in both products.
Audience: System administrators who support Experience Analytics On Premises.
Noteworthy: We had to move fast on this one. The team was given 3 weeks from concept design to public release of the software. The team was distributed across 10 time zones – I was in Boston, product management in Texas, development in Pune, India. We were able to save time because I built upon my previous experience with UBX and the fact that I was co-located with part of the UBX development team. Working iteratively with the Pune developers, we delivered within the 3-week deadline.
The integration requires administrators to modify a configuration file and a mapping file. I worked closely with the developers to embed instructions to the admin through extensive comments in both files. The embedded instructions supplement those in the documented procedures. In this way, I was able to ensure that administrators had the information they needed to complete the integration successfully.
Tools:
- IBM DITA and Oxygen XML editor for authoring
- Adobe Acrobat Pro for reviews
- Notepad++ for modifying the configuration file
What is Experience Analytics (Tealeaf) On Premises?
The on-premises version of Tealeaf is a suite of data analytic and traffic monitoring applications that customers install in their networks, behind their security firewall. Tealeaf applications monitor the content of web traffic that enters a company’s commercial website. Data analysts and system administrators configure the system to watch for specific patterns of customer behavior. The analytics can provide early warning of customer struggles, help detect fraud, troubleshoot problems, and monitor website performance.
What is UBX?
Universal Behavior Exchange (UBX) is a hosted service that enables separate marketing applications to exchange data about customers (audiences) and their behaviors (events). UBX end users (marketers) can exchange audience and event data between marketing applications without the need for costly software integrations or repeated requests to corporate IT departments.
